“After more than a yearlong campaign, Republican Mike Garcia joined the House on Tuesday as California’s newest 25th Congressional District representative — but the work is just beginning, and it will start with constituent services, he said.
“On Tuesday, joined by his wife and two children at the U.S. Capitol, the former fighter pilot was officially sworn in after winning the special election against Assemblywoman Christy Smith…
“‘I show up today, as not only a patriot, but now a citizen legislator, to make sure that we do what’s right for our country first, to make sure that we do what’s right for my district that I represent and to hopefully get through this crisis as a solid, unified country, becoming stronger as we do so, more cooperative in the efforts and, hopefully, making this nation the strongest the world has ever seen for several decades, millenniums to come.’”
“Garcia took the oath of office on the House of Representatives floor, conducted by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, after winning the 25th Congressional District special election one week prior.
“‘I can think of no better way to serve this country, to serve our district, than to be here today taking this oath and doing the job before me,’ Garcia said on the floor.
“’As a veteran, a businessman, a family man and a first-generation American, Mike has shown a driven approach to everything he’s taken,’ [House Minority Leader Kevin] McCarthy said.”
“[House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy] said that Garcia and Tiffany ‘have a good indication of what November is going to be like. If you look in California, we have not flipped a Democrat seat in more than 22 years, since 1998.’
“McCarthy said, ‘Just as we’ve watched special elections before, give us an early indicator of what will happen in November, I believe these two people standing behind me, give me the best indication that come November, there’ll be a change in this House and America will be in a much stronger position.’”
